Curb Resource Collection Provides Chittenden County a New Model for Residential Waste Hauling

By offering a pay-by-the-bag model for landfill-bound waste and including compost and recycling standard with all plans, Curb provides their community members an incentive to reduce their landfill footprint.

November 2, 2022 – WILLISTON, VT. Curb Resource Collection, a residential waste hauling company based in Williston, Vermont, is on a mission to provide its community members a better option for curbside waste management. Curb offers a selection of full-service (recycling, compost and landfill) and compost-only plans, all of which are currently available to residents of Burlington, South Burlington, Williston, and some neighborhoods in Shelburne.

Curb differentiates itself from other residential haulers by offering their full-service customers a lower monthly service fee and charging for landfill-bound waste by the bag. To achieve this, Curb customers prepay for bright yellow “Curb Landfill Stickers” that they attach to each bag of landfill-bound waste they generate. The fewer stickers a customer uses, the less they pay—a win-win both for the customer and the planet.

By including compost pickup standard with all plans, Curb makes it easy for households to reduce the amount of landfill-bound waste they create and stay in compliance with the state’s ban on throwing food scraps in the trash. (According to a 2018 Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation Report, organics accounted for 26 percent of all residential municipal solid waste.) Even backyard composters can benefit from a curbside composting service, which allows them to compost items like meat, bones, fish, and oils that are often kept out of backyard piles. This feature also allows customers that may be getting trash and recycling services from one company and food scrap pickup from another to consolidate all their waste hauling services into one convenient subscription.

Curb co-founder Brian Somers explains, “Curb is a local collection service with a big purpose: reduce landfill-bound waste. We built this business to encourage our neighbors and community members to repurpose, recycle, and reimagine their household discards not as waste, but as the resources that they are.”

Curb’s founders are four close friends—Brian Somers, Anna Stuart, Tommy Lyga and Kristen Lyga—all of whom are long-time Vermont residents. All four came to Vermont for college and decided to make it their permanent home after falling in love with the state’s natural beauty and its strong community spirit. “We know our fellow community members and how they value creative and sustainable alternatives. Curb provides that by offering a service that is beneficial both for individual households and the environment,” comments Kristen. "It is the Vermont mindset—adaptable, neighborly, and environmentally conscious—that makes the Curb model so well suited for this place, at this time."
