Hi there! We're Tommy, Kristen, Anna & Brian, and we're the founders of Curb!

We're four close friends who all  came to Vermont for college and decided to make it our permanent home after falling in love with the state’s natural beauty and its strong community spirit. Over the course of many dinners and long chats, we decided to start Curb. Our goal was to provide our neighbors a curbside solution for their recycling, compost, and landfill-bound waste that was easy, convenient, and incentivized Vermonters to reduce their landfill footprint.

We leveraged Brian's deep experience in the waste industry to design a pay-by-the bag model for landfill-bound waste.  This system had multiple benefits as it both made our members more mindful of their consumption and guaranteed they only had to pay for what they actually sent to the landfill.  (Other Vermont waste haulers charge for trash based on the size of the bin. Our view was that if folks weren't filling up their trash bin ahead of each pickup, they could be overpaying for those services.)

We also saw composting as a key tool to reducing landfill footprints. According to a 2018 Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation Report, food scraps accounted for 26 percent of all household waste, which is why we include compost pickup standard with all service plans.   Even backyard composters can benefit from a curbside composting service, which allows them to compost items like meat, bones, fish, and oils that are often kept out of backyard piles. This feature also allows customers that may be getting trash and recycling services from one company and food scrap pickup from another to consolidate all their waste hauling services into one convenient subscription.

“We know our fellow community members and how they value creative and sustainable alternatives. Curb provides that by offering a service that is beneficial both for individual households and the environment,” comments Kristen. "It is the Vermont mindset—adaptable, neighborly, and environmentally conscious—that makes the Curb model so well suited for this place, at this time."
